Projects of Buikwe Youth and Women Empowerment Project

Empower the youth and women of Buikwe by making a difference through your donations. Your support can help us provide skills training workshops, mentorship programs, and entrepreneurship development opportunities to those who need it the most.

School Support Project

BYWEP's School Support Project is a comprehensive initiative designed to transform education in Buikwe District through infrastructure development and direct student support. The project focuses on constructing durable, disability-accessible classrooms with climate-appropriate ventilation and solar-powered lighting, to replace dilapidated structures while simultaneously installing solar-powered water systems (60m boreholes + 5,000L tanks) to ensure reliable clean water access. These infrastructure improvements are complemented by gender-sensitive sanitation facilities, including menstrual hygiene rooms and handwashing stations, creating a conducive learning environment. Alongside infrastructure improvements, the program provides full and partial scholarships covering school fees, uniforms, books, and mentorship while prioritizing orphans (50%), girls at risk of early marriage (30%), and children with disabilities (20%). These interventions work synergistically, with new classrooms increasing enrollment by 30% in pilot schools while scholarships have achieved a remarkable 92% retention rate among recipients, demonstrating the project's holistic approach to educational barriers.

Agriculture Project

The BYWEP Agriculture Project empowers rural women in Buikwe District through transformative poultry farming and climate-smart agriculture. At its core, the project trains women in high-yield poultry production, providing improved chicken breeds, vaccination programs, and business skills that enable participants like Nakato (a mother of four) to earn $50–$100 monthly from egg sales. Women dominate 70% of participation across all programs, with specialized initiatives including land mediation for female cooperatives and mobile-based veterinary support, leading to a 142% income increase for women farmers since 2022. The poultry model uses a "pass-on" system, where beneficiaries pay forward chicks to new members, creating exponential impact. Beyond poultry, the project integrates women into sustainable value chains, teaching drought-resistant crop farming (cassava, maize) and post-harvest technologies like solar dryers—critical for climate resilience. BYWEP links women's groups to premium markets (e.g., Jumia Foods) and provides gender-sensitive financial training, ensuring long-term independence

HIV/AIDS Support Project

This Project delivers comprehensive prevention, treatment, and empowerment services to combat HIV/AIDS in Buikwe District. Through mobile clinics and community partnerships, we provide free testing (reaching 2500+ people annually), PrEP education, and condom distribution while training peer mentors to support antiretroviral (ARV) adherence - achieving a 90% treatment compliance rate among participants, far exceeding Uganda's national average. Our stigma reduction programs have reduced HIV-related school dropouts by 60% through support groups and legal advocacy, with special focus on protecting women and youth from discrimination in schools and workplaces. The project empowers vulnerable groups through integrated health and economic solutions, offering nutrition support, transport vouchers for clinic visits, and income-generating training in tailoring and poultry farming to 200+ women living with HIV. By addressing both medical and socioeconomic barriers, we've created a model that not only sustains health outcomes but also restores dignity - with plans to expand testing to 10 new villages and launch youth-focused SMS education in 2026
